BNP leader Milon gets bail in 18 cases

Chandpur, Jan 28 – The High Court on Monday granted bail to BNP international affairs secretary and former state minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon in 18 cases filed over extortion and various acts of violence, some 68 days after he was arrested.
The party’s lawyers, leaders and activities welcomed him as he came out from Chandpur jail.
Talking to media outside, Milon said, “Earlier I served 449 days jail and later served 68 days for the same case. I have nothing to say in this connection.”
Chandpur Judicial Magistrate Judge Mohammad Shafiul Azam sent him to jail when police produced him before the court in three cases filed with Kachua police station on charge of extortion and theft.
Earlier November 23, 2018, detectives in a drive arrested Milon from a house at Chwakbazar area in Chattogram city early Friday.
Mizanur Rahman, additional superintendent of Chandpur police, said a team of DB and Chandpur thana police conducted a joint drive at the residence of Shah Alam ‘Mamtaz Chayanir’ at Chatteshwari Road around 4:30 am and arrested Milon, international affairs secretary of BNP.
Mejbah Uddin, former district election officer, filed a case with Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station against Milon in 2009 for not submitting his election expenses return on time.
Earlier on Monday, his bail was sought in Chandpur District and Sessions Judge’s Court and Additional Chief Magistrate’s Court in 16 cases but the courts rejected the prayers.
A total of 28 cases against Milon, including on charges of extortion, stealing vanity bags and mugging, are under trial in courts in Chandpur. – UNB
