BNP ridicules Ershad’s new political alliance

BNP on Sunday ridiculed the Jatiya Party-led new political alliance, United National Alliance (UNA), saying all the parties there, except two, are created by HM Ershad.

“We’ve heard the so-called domestic opposition party has formed an alliance with 58 parties. Of the parties, two have registration (with the Election Commission) and the rest are created by him (Ershad),” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

He came up with the remarks while speaking at a workers’ meeting of BNP’s Dhaka city unit at Mohanagar Natya Mancha.

Earlier in the day, Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad announced the journey of his party-led new alliance UNA with 58 parties at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club.

Of the 58 parties, only Jatiya Party and Bangladesh Islamic Front have registration with the Election Commission.

The 56 other parties belong to two other platforms– the 34-party ‘National Islamic Grand Alliance and 22-party ‘Bangladesh National Alliance’.

Fakhrul said Jatiya Party, which still belongs to the Awami League –led grand alliance, has made another alliance. “The party can’t come out of the grand alliance in fear of losing its existence.”

He also voiced doubt about the future of UNA when Jatiya Party is playing a dual role by keeping its three members at the cabinet being the opposition party in parliament.

Fakhrul urged the Dhaka south unit BNP leaders and activists to get ready for leading a movement for restoration of democracy by enhancing their organisational capacity.

“You must strengthen your organisational capability and create strongholds at every locality by collecting new members,” he told his party colleagues.”
