The BNP has preferred silence to support for Jamaat leader Ali Ahsan Mohammed Mojaheed who was awarded a death sentence in charge of crimes against humanity.BNP’s top leadership has not provided any reaction to the verdict — much as they remained silent over the ‘life in prison’ verdict of Jamaat guru Ghulam Azam on Monday.
International Crimes Tribunal-2 announced the verdict for Mpjaheed on Wednesday.
He was sentenced to death as the ICT found him guilty in five out of the seven charges.
BNP Joint General Secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi held a press briefing at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarter soon after the verdict.
In the press briefing Rizvi condemned a comment by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in parliament but refused to say anything else.
Rizvi said, “the press briefing has been called to protest the Prime Minister’s comment. I will not talk about anything else now.”
The BNP leader criticised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s concluding speech in parliament on Tuesday.
“The Prime Minister made some tasteless comments in and outside the parliament. She used vulgar words. We condemn that.”
Rizvi said the Prime Minister is slandering BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and his family ‘to continue the political unrest in the country’.
“There is no point to making these bad comments. The people will reply to all of Awami League’s misdeeds one day.”
Rizvi criticised the Prime Minister for her comment on the BNP backed candidates who were victorious at the recent polls to the five city corporations.
“The defeat of the government-backed candidates has made the Prime Minister loose her bearings. She described the winners as terrorists to vent her anger.”
