He also told reporters on Wednesday after a programme in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar about his party’s support for the teachers’ demand for a separate pay-scale.
The teachers have been demonstrating for the last few days demanding a separate pay-scale and claiming they were let down by the eighth national pay-scale.
On Tuesday, Finance Minister AMA Muhith criticised the movement, saying the teachers were demonstrating “due to the lack of knowledge” and that they had “no idea” what the pay scale they had been offered.
The government on Monday cleared the eighth pay scale with a basic pay ranging between Tk 8,250 and Tk 78,000.
It did not, however, mention anything separately about the selection grade of professors who enjoyed the top grade in the seventh pay scale along with the secretaries and major generals.
Muhith also alleged the universities promoted teachers without following any rules, dubbing it a ‘corrupt practice’.
“We believe that instead of criticising the teachers, their demand should be properly evaluated to introduce a separate scale for the teachers,” Shah said.
He hoped the government would ‘come to its senses’ and bring an end to the teachers’ unrest.
