BNP to support Nat’l Committee’s progs to save Sundarbans: Fakhrul

Dhaka – BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said their party will extend its support to any programme of the National Committee to Protect Oil-Gas, Natural Resources and Power-Ports protesting the Rampal power plant near the Sundarbans.
“We’d earlier given our statements about the Rampal power plant. Our chairperson also talked about the matter and registered our protest against it. We’d also extended our support to the movement of the national committee. But it’s unfortunate that they (national committee) made an adverse comment about our support which has hurt us,” he said.
Speaking at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, the BNP leader further said, “Despite that, we have support to all the justified and democratic movements against the Rampal power plant and it will continue.”
Earlier on Saturday, member secretary of the national committee Prof Anu Muhammad announced that they will observe a half-day hartal in the capital on January 26 if the government does not cancel the Rampal coal-fired power plant project near the Sundarbans by then.
Fakhrul hailed the national committee for continuing their movement against the Rampal power plant saying most of them of the platform have no direct involvement with politics. “They’re working on the issue and creating public opinions in the country’s interest.”
Echoing Prof Anu Muhammad, the BNP leader said the country’s 99 percent people think that the Rampal power plant is not good for the country.
He alleged that the government is setting up the power plan by force ignoring public opinions. “They (govt) had brought some experts from India who yesterday (Sunday) justified that the plant can be installed.” -UNB
