Dhaka-BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan yesterday said the BNP would do whatever is possible for them to resist terrorism and extremism in the country.“The BNP made a call for national unity to help the government. It (government) wants it can decline the proposal by imposing conditions. But the BNP will do whatever is possible for the party to resist terrorism and extremism,” he said at a press briefing at party’s central office at Naya Paltan in the city.
Asked whether the BNP would snap its ties with Jamaat-e-Islami, a major component of the 20-party alliance, he said they would look into the matter after the talks for national unity would begin.
The BNP leader questioned journalists as to why they are considering the Jamaat as an alternative for the national unity. “Why you (journalists) do not question while the government was formed comprising ‘rajakars’ and autocrats?” he questioned.
Besides, he said, decision about Jamaat will be taken at the party forum.
Nazrul said the BNP chairperson was entrusted the responsibility to announce the next course of action and she would do it after exchanging with people from different sections and professionals.
He claimed that the BNP chairperson’s call for national unity has been appreciated both in home and abroad but some government ministers and ruling party leaders are blaming Khaleda and the BNP through blame game.
The BNP leader said the law enforcers and administration could not resist terrorism and they would not be able to do it.
“There is no alternative with a national unity. But the government is showing its irresponsibility by not responding to the call of the BNP chairperson. They are encouraging terrorism by hiding the real perpetrators,” he said.
BNP chairperson’s adviser Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan, joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokan, Mojibur Rahman Sarwar and Syed Imran Saleh Prince, among others, were present at the press conference.
Meanwhile, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday left Dhaka for London to attend the House of Lords discussion on Bangladesh issue.
The BNP leader will lead a five-member delegation to the discussion scheduled for July 19.
The other members of the team are: BNP chairperson’s adviser Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury , Sabihuddin Ahmed, Nitai Roy Chowdhury and Barrister Rumin Farhana.
A delegation of the ruling Awami League is also expected to join the discussion.-STAFF REPORTER
