BNP’s demo April 28, hunger strike May 4 against repression

BNP will stage demonstrations across the country on Apr 28, while ‘mass hunger strike’ on May 4 to register its protest against what it said the repressive acts of the government. BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the protest programmes at the party’s Nayapaltan central office at noon. Fakhrul told reporters that their demonstration and mass hunger strike programmes are meant for registering protest against the “government’s growing repressive acts like killing of opposition leaders and activists, their forced disappearances, filing of false cases against them” and indictment of Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman. He said their demonstrations will be held in all upazilas, district towns and divisional cities while the mass hunger strike will be observed from 9am to 6pm at the same places. The BNP spokesman alleged the government is implementing a blueprint to keep away BNP leaders and activists from politics and BNP from out of the future elections by filing “false” cases against the leaders and activists of the party. He said “false” cases were field one after another against their party chief Khaleda Zia, senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman, most standing committee members, other central leaders and even district, upazila, thana and union-level leaders. The BNP leader questioned how democracy will sustain and democratic practice will be possible to continue in a country when top union level leaders of the largest party are implicated in “false” cases. – UNB
