BNP’s protest rally in capital rescheduled for Saturday

Denied permission to hold its protest rally in front of its Nayapaltan central office at 2pm today (Thursday), BNP rescheduled it for Saturday.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi came up with the revised scheduled of their programme at a press conference at the party central office.

As part of the party’s countrywide programme, BNP was scheduled to hold the rally in front of its central office today protesting the Supreme Court order upholding its stay on the bail granted by the High Court to Khaleda Zia in a murder case filed in Cumilla.

“Police didn’t give us permission to stage our today’s (Thursday’s) protest programme in the capital showing various excuses. So, we’re rescheduling it for Saturday,” Rizvi said.

He, however, said their party’s different units are observing the programme across the country today.

Rizvi said BNP leaders and activists will also observe a token hunger strike on July 9 from 9am to 4pm all over the country, including Dhaka, demanding Khaleda’s release from jail and her better medical treatment.

Huge police members were deployed around the BNP office since morning over the party’s protest programme.

About the denial of bail to Khaleda in two cases here, Rizvi said the court’s order was given to fulfill the government’s desire.

“Khaleda Zia was not granted bail in two cases today (Thursday). She is not getting bail in billable cases due to the government’s obstruction at the behest of Sheikh Hasina,” he added.

Two courts here on Thursday rejected the bail petitions filed by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in two cases filed against her– one for celebrating ‘fake’ birthday and another for undermining the country’s map, national flag and the Liberation War.
