Some unruly activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of of Jamaat-e-Islami, have
hurled two bombs at police in Rajshahi on the second day of the BNP-led 18-party
enforced indefinite blockade today (Thursday).
However, nobody was injured in the attack. Officer-in-Charge of Rajparha Police Station
ABM Rezaul Karim said shibir activists blocked a road in the city’s Daspukur area under
Rajpara Police Station around 7.45am by placing burning objects.
He added that the Jamaat supporters hurled two handmade bombs at the police when
they arrived.
Police broke the blockade by firing rubber bullets. Traffic resumed soon after the police
doused the fire.
On December 26, a police constable had died and eight others had been injured in a
bomb attack on a truck requisitioned for police duty.
Police and RAB personnel had raided the city after the incident, seizing 4.5 kg of
gunpowder and 60 handmade bombs from several places including a Shibir den.
Meanwhile, BNP activists were not active in the Rajshahi city even on the second day of
the blockade, though members of Shibir were seen on the streets.
BNP Joint Secretary General and Rajshahi Metropolitan President Mizanur Rahman
Minu, district President Nadim Mostofa and central committee member and Rajshahi
City Mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul went into hiding after being charged with the
murder of the policeman killed in last week’s bomb attack. -BSS, Rajshahi
