‘Boost fish production to meet nutrition needs’

Speakers at a function here  on Thursday stressed the need for
boosting production of fishes including indigenous ones to meet the
growing nutrition demand of the country.
“As the fisheries sector has been meeting 80 percent demand  of the
total animal protein, there is no alternative to fish  production in
large scale through best use of the existing water  bodies in changed
environment and situation”, they said.
They made the observations while addressing a preparatory meeting to
observe the National Fisheries Week- 2013 jointly organized by
district administration and district fisheries department at the
conference room of deputy commissioner (DC).
With DC Dr Quazi Anwarul Haque in the chair, the function was also
addressed, among others, by district fisheries officer SM Rashedul
Haque, district livestock officer Abul Kashem, crops production
specialist of department of agriculture extension Golam Mostafa,
deputy director (DD) of social services department M Shahidul Islam,
DD of department of youth development Gias Uddin and fish cultivator
M. Anwar Hossain.
Due to various reasons including usage of excessive pesticide in the
land, using banned current net in the water bodies, lack of fish
sanctuaries and bad impacts of climate change the indigenous fishes
are disappearing day by day, they said.
In this context, the speakers called upon the fish scientists,
researchers and others concerned to invent sustainable methods to cope
with the changed climatic condition with a view to keeping fish
production increasing anyhow to meet its demand in the country.
After elaborate discussion, programmes have been chalked out to
observe the National Fisheries Week in all the seven upazilas in the
district from July 02 to July 08 in a befitting manner.
The programmes include bringing out rally, discussion meeting, fish
fry releasing in the water bodies, motivational meeting for the fish
traders against the harmful effects of formalin using in the fishes
and prize distribution to the successful fish cultivators.
DC in his concluding remarks urged all to build social movement on
fish cultivation in the district and sought whole hearted cooperation
of all concerned to make the forthcoming national fisheries week a
grand success.
All the members of the district fisheries committee, fish cultivators,
fishermen, NGO activists and journalists took part in the meeting.
