Boro harvest suffers for labour shortage

Sunamganj: Farmers in Jagannathpur upazila of the district are facing difficulty in harvesting boro paddy this season for want of adequate number of farm labourers.Unavailability of farm labourers as per requirement has put the farmers in the haor areas in a worry about timely harvesting of their ripe boro paddy in the fields.
Farmers said this time every year labourers from different areas outside the district cut their paddy during the boro harvesting period.
For this, the farm workers take money from them in advance under contract.
They take their wage especially two-three months ahead of the harvest.
This year, the farmers are facing a tough time due to shortage of farm labourers.
Farmer Ali Hossain of Balbal village in Jagannathpur municipality area said he could not harvest paddy so far this year due to lack of farm workers.
He is desperate looking for workers to cut his paddy.
Farmer Matiur Rahman of Ekorchhari village said a group of workers from Pabna took advance wage in the month of Magh but they have already informed their inability to come for personal problems.
These workers have cut his paddy for the last six years and this is this time that he is facing a severe problem for their absence.
Jagannathpur Upazila Haor Development Council president Shahdiul Islam Bakul said farmers are in apprehension of natural disaster including flash flood, which might hamper harvesting of the crop.
And the shortage of labourers is delaying harvest of their paddy.
Chilaura-Haldipur union chairman Arash Mia said bumper production of boro in different districts has mainly deepened the crisis of workers.
Due to shortage of labourers, 60 per cent of boro paddy in the area could not be harvested yet, he added.
