Bringing govt colleges under public varsities

Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Prof AK Azad Chowdhury on Monday said government university colleges need to be brought under public universities to improve the quality of education alongside reducing session jams at the tertiary level.
The UGC chairman was addressing a tripartite meeting among the UGC, vice-chancellors of public universities and the representatives of BCS General Education Samity at UGC auditorium.The meeting was arranged to seek opinions about bringing government university colleges under 36 public universities, aiming to reduce academic and administrative pressure on the National University in light with the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, Rajshahi University Vice Chancellor Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) Vice Chancellor Prof Khaleda Ekram, Chittagong University Vice Chancellor Prof Anowarul Azim Arif, Jahangirnagar University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Farzana Islam, Jagannath University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman, UGC members Prof Mohammad Mohabbat Khan, Prof Abul Hashem and Prof Md Akhtar Hossain and UGC Secretary Dr Md Khaled were present at the meeting, said a press release.
On August 31, the Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Education to bring the government colleges under public universities for their smooth functioning.
The UGC also held a meeting with the vice chancellors of the country’s 36 public universities on the issue on December 7 at the Education Ministry’s request. – UNB
