EU condemns Avijit murder, British HC shocked

British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Robert W Gibson on Friday expressed deep shock at the savage murder of Avijit Roy.
The delegation of the European Union (EU) to Bangladesh on Friday condemned the brutal assault and killing of blogger Avijit Roy and wounding of his wife.According to a report the British High Commissionerexpressed his shock through a message on twitter.
Avijit Roy, founder of Muktamoa blog, was killed and his wife Rafida Afrin Banya injured seriously as unidentified criminals stabbed them near TSC on the Dhaka University (DU) Campus on Thursday night after they came out of the Ekushey Book Fair.
Avijit and Rafida, an expatriate couple living in the USA, returned home a few days back as Avijit’s two books were published on the occasion of the Ekushey Book Fair.
The EU, in a message, reiterated its strong attachment to freedom of expression which constitutes an essential element of a democratic society.
The EU also called for a prompt investigation to bring perpetrators to justice.
The EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Pierre Mayaudon expressed his condolences to Roy’s family.
Meanwhile, police was yet to find a clue to the murder which Avijit’s father Prof. Ajoy Roy blamed on extremists without naming anybody.
The body of Avijit is expected to be donated to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital for medical research as per the wish of the slain blogger, sources said on Friday. – News Desk
