A Digital archive of agricultural theses and journals of Bangladesh have been set up under a sub-project (CP-534) of Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Prof. Dr. Md. Sekender Ali, sub project manager (SPM) of CP-534 of the Department of Agricultural Extension & Information System of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka had successfully accomplished the project.
The ultimate goal of the Archive is to establish a dynamic, open source based content management system (CMS) driven highly customised and state-of-the-art search engine equipped web portal. Till now, nearly 6000 theses and journals of different agricultural universities of Bangladesh including SAU have been included in the archive. Academics, researchers and others may visit the archive at: www.daatj.netMeanwhile another HEQEP sub-project CP-3655 is now working to upgrade/update and to incorporate plagiarism software in the existing archive. The objective of the present project is to control plagiarism in academic fields.
One thing this writer wishes to mention here that through accomplishment of sub-projects of UGC HEQEP, the overall academic and research system of all the universities of Bangladesh including SAU have witnessed significant development. But it is a matter of concern that the universities in most cases have no fund to keep maintaining the accomplished projects.
For instance, the Digital Archive needs some operational costs (e.g. website rent) but after accomplishment of the concerned sub-project, no fund is there to meet such operational expenses. Of course for the moment such expenses are being met by the current project CP-3655 as it’s rather an extension of the previous one CP-534. So, it would be appreciated if the Ministry of Education and UGC could take some appropriate steps in this regard.
