Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) on Wednesday protested the government’s plan to increase the power tarrif. In a statement, party general secretary Khalequzzaman said the government hiked the power price six times in its previous tenure.“As per its plan to increase power price again, the government has already asked the electricity distribution companies to submit proposals in this regard,” he said.
Khalequzzaman said the price of power generated by the Power Development Board is below Tk 3 per unit, but the power price at subscriber level reaches Tk 6. “As the PDB buys power from the rental and quick rental plants, its expenditure has increased, but the general subscribers have to bear the additional cost.”
He said despite power price hikes in previous periods, the government provides Tk 600 crore as subsidy in the power sector per year.
