Call for ensuring legal aid to oppressed women

Speakers at a reflection workshop have stressed for making women’s legal rights a reality in Bangladesh through reaching legal aid services to the victims of domestic violence and repression.Bangladesh National Women Lawyers’ Association (BNWLA) organised the upazila level reflection workshop on “Making women’s legal rights a reality in Bangladesh” at Shilpakala Academy auditorium in the city on Monday afternoon.Chief of Rangpur divisional unit of BNWLA Advocate Kohinoor Begum presided over the workshop participated by its members, public representatives, police members, lawyers, civil society members, professionals, journalists and local elite.Female Councilors of Rangpur City Corporation Jafrin Islam Ripa, Hasna Banu and Anju Monwara Begum, former Councilor Bahlul Islam Jeplin, Assistant Sub-inspector Zannatul Kaiser, Advocates Mahbuba Jasmine Luna and Tanzina Begum, addressed.Member of BNWLA Advocate Farzana Bappi, photojournalist Asaduzzaman Afzal, Paralegal Aid Activists Anjuman Ara, Shahana Khatun, Advocate Abu Sayem, Tapoti Ghosh Mossarraf Hossain Raju, also spoke.Executive Coordinator of the divisional unit of BNWLA Advocate Farooque Hossain and its Manager (Capacity Building) Rakhal Chandra Das conducted different sessions in the workshop as resource persons.The workshop put special emphasis on providing legal aid to the victims of repression and violence for ensuring justice and preventing these special curses from the society to ensure smooth development and empowerment of the women.They stressed for involving the civil society members, public representatives, law enforcers, community leaders, sociocultural and professional activists for ending repression, torture and violence against women and children.The women are being subjected to violence, torture and abuse in every family, working places, roads, transports and everywhere due to lack of adequate social awareness and cooperative attitudes, they said.The speakers asked all concerned for making women’s legal rights a reality in the country by creating awareness and reaching legal aid to the victims for eradicating repression and violence against women to build a peaceful society. -BSS, Rangpur
