Dhaka shopping mall fire death toll rises to 7

Dhaka – A man who received burn injuries in a fire at a shopping mall in the city’s Uttara area on Friday evening died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital early Saturday taking the death toll from the incident to seven, Unb news agency reported.The deceased was identified as Mahmudul Hasan, 36, deputy general manager engineer of Tropical Homes Limited.
Mahmudul, who suffered burns to 80 percent of his body, succumbed to his injuries at the burn unit of the hospital around 4am, said hospital sources.
Earlier, six people died and around 50 others were injured in the fire incident.
Fire Service sources said the fire broke out at the 14-storey Tropical Alauddin Tower Shopping Complex around 6:15pm following a blast after the collapse of three lifts.
Under the impact of the lift crashes, building glasses– from the 5th floor to the ground floor — tore apart and their broken pieces fell on the people staying on different floors, leaving many injured.
At the same time, a fire also broke out at the shopping mall.
On information, 13 firefighting units rushed in and brought the fire under control around 7:15pm.
The incident left six people dead and around 50 others injured.
Three of the injured — Mahmudul Hasan, 36, his daughter Mayisha, 10, and eight-month-old son Mustakim — were taken to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Their condition was found critical as they suffered 80, 55, and 23 percent burns to their bodies respectively.
The incident happened when Mahmudul Hasan along with his family members and office colleagues was taking preparation for an iftar party at the basement of the tower.
