Dhaka – Chief Justice SK Sinha yesterday (Monday) assigned a High Court bench to hear three appeals in a 25-year-old corruption case filed against Jatiyata Party Chief HM Ershad.Later, the bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus and Justice Bhishmadev Chakraborty fixed a date for the hearing the appeals, Anti Corruption Commission's lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told newsmen.
Of the three appeals, one was filed by HM Ershad challenging the subordinate verdict that sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment in the case. Two other appeals were filed by the Government for enhancing the sentence of Ershad.
On March 23, the bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus refrained from delivering verdict on the appeal filed by Ershad against the subordinate court verdict against him.
The then Bureau of Anti-Corruption, which was defunct after formation of the ACC in 2004, had filed the case against Ershad with Cantonment Police Station in 1992 on the charge of misappropriating Tk 1.91 crore by misusing powers at different times when he was the President of the country from December 11, 1983 to December 6, 1990. – Special Correspondent
