Clash over control kills 1 in Habiganj

One person was killed and 30 others were injured in a clash between two groups of
villagers over establishing supremacy at Shibpur village in Lakhai upazila on Tuesday
afternoon.
The victim was identified as Jewel Mia, 28, son of Joynal Mia of the same village.
Police and witnesses said there had been a dispute prevailing for long between two
former union parishad members—Fazlu Miah and Majhu Miah—of Shibpur village over
establishing dominance in the area.
The incident ensued following an altercation between the supporters of the two former
local public representatives at the village in the afternoon.
At one stage, the two rival groups, equipped with indigenous arms, attacked each other,
leaving 31 people, including Jewel, supporter of Maju Mia, injured.
Of the 31, the critically injured ones were admitted to Lakhai Upazila Health Complex
and local private clinics.
Jewel died at the health complex in the evening.
Among the other injured, seven were shifted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital as their
condition was seen worsening.
Police recovered the body and sent it to the Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. -UNB,
