C’nawabganj flashflood damages paddy on 50 hectares

Dhaka, Apr 26 – Boro paddy on some 50 hectares of croplands in Gomostapur upazila of Chapainawabganj has been damaged due to flashflood triggered by the onrush of water from the upstream through the Punarbhova River. The water started rolling down through the Kujain Beel (water body), adjacent to Indian border, as the water of the river has been flowing above its red mark since Monday afternoon, said Gomostapur agriculture officer Masud Hossain.
Most of the affected farmers here were trying to gather their half-ripen boro paddy in their futile exercise, said Masud adding that all the 635 hectares of boro paddy fields in the area will go under water if it continues to flow for the next 2-3 days.
Locals alleged that the flashflood hit the area as Indian authorities opened up a sluice gate built on their side on the Punarbhova river.
The onrush of water also submerged some 250 hectares of paddy fields at Chhaor Union Parishad in Porsha upazila, adjacent to Naogaon district, said Masud.
Meanwhile, the district administration has made a list of the affected farmers for providing them with necessary support, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Firoz Mahmud. – UNB
