Jahan Afroz, a brilliant watercolourist and a skilled potter and jeweler, Jahan Afroz, known to her family and friends as Ruba, has been making quilts as well. She is able to weave into her quilts splashes of vibrant colors, colors that mimic those in nature, especially those of the flora. In her words, “When I see fabrics, they become the finished product in my mind immediately. When making the quilt, I try to infuse in it the trees and flowers that surround me.”
Ruba lives in Maryland, USA. She is a freelance artist with an MFA from the Fine Arts Institute of Dhaka University. Her work is influenced by both western and eastern styles. She wants her art to be the resting place for the viewer, an escape from the mundane. “Shantih” or peace was the theme of her exhibition held at the J.
Glenn Beall Memorial Hall of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Frostburg, Maryland. Held in 2010, the show was s major accomplishment in her career. Many visitors felt her passion for peace in nature was unique and impressive. In addition to her other talents, Ruba is an expert in making decorative tiles, all of which reflect this passion.
“Nature,” she says, “is my romantic space. All my works reveal both my mood and the changing seasons.”
Ruba creates and extracts colors, images, and lines in her journey “to discover the ultimate truth and beauty.”- Press release
