Confinement protest: 20-party, JCD call hartal in 15 districts

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student wing of BNP will enforce hartal in 14 districts in Dhaka Division excluding the capital protesting the confinement of party chairperson Khaleda Zia and demanding the release of top opposition leaders including acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir from jail.
The districts where the hartal will be effective are: Dhaka district, Naryanganj district and city, Gazipur, Tangail, Munshiganj, Manikganj, Comilla North and South, Brahmanbaria, Kishoreganj, Mymensingh, Sherpur, Jamalpur and Netrakona.
The JCD announced the hartal programme through a press release issued on Sunday.JCD president Razib Ahsan and general secretary Akramul Hasan asked the JCD leaders of concerned districts to make the hartal programme a success.
The hartal programme coincides with a rally of ruling Awami League at Suhrawardy Udyan to mark the homecoming day of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and comes together with BNP-led 20-party’s blockade programme.
The local units of BNP-led 20-party alliance Sunday called dawn-to-dusk hartal for Monday in four districts including three districts adjacent to the capital city of Dhaka. The districts are: Narayanganj, Gazipur, Manikganj and Noakhali.
The alliance called the hartal demanding the withdrawal of barricades from in front of Bnp chairperson’s Gulshan office, the release of top party leaders including Bnp acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and in protest against harassment of opposition leaders and activists.
Naryanganj district Bnp president Toimur Alam Khandaker confirmed that the 20-party alliance called the daylong hartal in Narayanganj.
Leaders of Gazipur, Manikganj and Noakhali districts also confirmed that they would enforce hartal on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Comilla unit of JCD called hartal in the district protesting confinement of Khaleda Zia at her office and imposition of ban on publication of statement of Tarique Rahman. Senior vice chairman of Comilla (South) JCD Sajjadul Kabir confirmed the news.
When contacted BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said he was sure that the hartal programme was given with the consent of party chief Khaleda Zia.
JCD office secretary Abdus Sattar Patwari said the capital city of Dhaka will be outside the purview of the hartal. – Staff Reporter
