Police in Jessore have claimed the death of a man in an ‘encounter’ between two gangs of robbers. They are yet to confirm his identity, bdnews24.com reported.
But relatives have identified him as ‘Jahangir’ and blamed police for whisking him away before he was found dead in a state-run hospital in Jessore on Saturday morning.The victim’s family claims that police whisked away 32-year-old ‘Jahangir’ and his brother ‘Tutul’ from their home in the wee hours of Saturday.
Police said they had been informed about the ‘encounter’ between the robbers from the Doulatdihi area at midnight.
“The robbers fled as soon as police reached the spot. A man with bullet wounds was found on the spot and taken to the Jessore Sadar Hospital,” said OC Md Elias Hossain of Jessore’s Kotowali Police Station.
The hospital’s physician Kallol Kumar Saha said police brought in a body just after 3am.
He said a bullet was found on the back of the victim’s head and that he had died at least half an hour before he was brought in to the hospital.
Police claim they recovered a fire arm from the spot of the ‘encounter’ and that they could not confirm the identity of the dead man.
But one person at the Jessore hospital has identified the victim as his nephew Jahangir.
Nasir Uddin, a sergeant with the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), told reporters at the hospital that Jahangir and his brother Tutul had been taken away by police from their home around 1am on Saturday.
“After getting the news of a body being brought at the hospital, we found out that it was Jahangir. Tutul is still missing; we have gone to the police,” he said.
He, however, could not confirm whether Jahangir was wanted in any charges
