Cops among 5 hurt in B’baria BNP-police clash

At least five people, including two policemen, were injured in a clash between policemen and BNP-Hefajat activists during hartal at Kattapara intersection in Sarail upazila on Wednesday morning.The inured policemen are assistant sub-inspectors Mintu and Ismail.
Witnesses said a group of activists of Bangladesh Nationalist party (BNP) and Hefajat-e-Islam supporting the hartal brought out a procession on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in the area at about 09:30am.
The clash ensued when police obstructed the procession and charged baton to disperse the BNP activists.
A chase and counter-chase took place in the area that left three BNP men injured.
The hartal supporters threw brick chips targeting police that left two policemen injured.
The unruly Hartal activists vandalised two CNG-run auto-rickshaws and one pickup van at that time.
The 18-party alliance called the countrywide two-day series daylong hartal for today (Wednesday) and Thursday protesting the killing of unarmed Alems (Islamic scholars) in a crackdown on Hefajat-e-Islami’s sit-in at Shapla Chattar early Monday.
