Observing that the country has apparently become a death valley due to serial killings, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday called for putting up a united resistance irrespective of politics and opinions to get rid of it. Dhaka, UNB News Agency Reported.
“Serial killings have begun in the country. The current situation manifests that the country is expanding as a graveyard …as if the country’s people are living in a dark cave without any security,” she said in a statement.Khaleda issued the statement voicing deep concern over the murders of a police officer’s wife and a Christian grocer in broad daylight in Chittagong and Bogra on Sunday.
The BNP chief further said, “This country where people have no right has turned into a death valley. People have to pass their every moment amid a terrible fear of losing their lives. Our existence as a nation will be at stake if we can’t put up a strong resistance irrespective of politics and opinions to overcome the situation.”
Unidentified miscreants gunned down Mahmuda Khanam, 33, wife of police super Babul Akhter, at Chittagong city’s GEC intersection.Sunil Gomej, 60, a grocer and a former employee of Banpara Christian Missionary, was hacked to death by unidentified assailants at Banpara Christian Palli in Baraigram upazila, Bogra.
Khaleda strongly condemned and protested the killings and demanded the government immediately arrest and mete out exemplary punishment to the real killers.She said the government instead of suppressing the militant activities and arresting the offenders are spreading confusion among people by shifting the blame on opposition.
“Taking this opportunity, the militants are becoming stronger. Though the extremists are carrying out killing incidents in broad daylight without any fear, the power-hungry people are not taking those into its consideration,” the BNP chief observed.Referring to the similar killings for foreigners and people of different faiths, no one knows how far this ‘blood of river’ will flow.
Accusing the government of showing apathy to the recent killings, she said, “A big question has arisen in public mind what is the mystery behind the barbaric incidents and what message the government and the militants are trying to send out?” She thinks the militant activities are one of the side effects of one-party misrule of the current government.
Khaleda also said there is no difference between the attitudes of ‘militants the current regime’ as two sides cannot tolerate alterative thinking and opinions.
