Court defers Zia Orphanage case to June 1

Dhaka – The Special Court-5 of Dhaka yesterday deferred the hearing in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case filed against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and others to June 1.

Judge Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman of Special Judge Court-5 passed the order after hearing on a time petition filed by the BNP leader’s lawyer.Earlier on May 8, the High Court transferred the case to Dhaka’s Senior Special Judge Court (Metropolitan Session Judge’s Court) from the Special Judge Court-3 of Dhaka.

On July 3, 2008, the ACC filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case with Ramna Police Station accusing Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique Rahman, now living in the UK after securing bail, and four others for misappropriating over Tk 21.00 million (2.10 crore) that came as grants from a foreign bank for orphans.

Besides, the ACC filed the Zia Charitable Trust graft case on August 8, 2011, with Tejgaon Model Police Station accusing four people, including Khaleda Zia, of abuse of power in raising funds for the trust from unknown sources.
