The BNP yesterday expressed apprehension that Bangladesh’s geographical independence would be threatened if defence agreement is signed with India.
“The people will not accept any agreement against country’s independence and sovereignty during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ensuing visit to India,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Speaking at a joint meeting of the party Bhasani Auditorium, he said the issues being discussed centering the Prime Minister’s visit created concern among the people.
He expressed his concern over the issues being published in the newspapers on her (PM) visit on April 7-9 saying that nothing has been disclosed formally as to whatever agreements will be signed during her visit.
The BNP leader said that the BNP along with the nation would not compromise on existence of sovereignty of the country.
He said the premier needs to visit to New Delhi to resolve the outstanding problems with India.
Giving importance on Teesta water sharing, Mirza Alamgir questioned the necessity of others agreements if Teesta agreement is not signed.
He accused the government of cornering the BNP by using militants politically.
The BNP leader said all political parties and people of different views should be get united to resist the militancy.
“Such a situation has been created as if nobody can speak about militancy. There is an evil effort to shift the responsibility to BNP if any militant activity takes place,” he said.
The meeting decided to bring out a colourful procession from in front of the party central office at Naya Paltan at 2:00pm on March 26 to mark the Independence Day.
The BNP leader called upon theparty leaders and activists to make the programme a success.
Presided over by Mirza Abbas, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Awal Mintoo and Abdus Salam.
