A two-day annual election of Dhaka Bar Association began on Wednesday morning to elect a new executive committee of the association for 2015-2016.
The voting will end on Thursday (February 26). A total of 61 candidates from pro-Awami League ‘White Panel’, Pro-BNP-Jamaat ‘Blue Panel’ and some independent candidates of the ‘Green Panel’ are vying for 25 positions.Advocate SM Altaf Hossain, has been made the Chief Election Commissioner to conduct the election of the biggest bar of the country. A total of 15,372 lawyers are eligible to cast their votes in the election this year.
The BNP-Jamaat backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya (Blue Panel) swept the Dhaka Bar Association elections last year bagging 18 posts out of 25, including the president and general secretary posts. On the other hand, the ruling Awami League-backed Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad (White Panel) secured six posts that time. – Court Correspondent
