Dhaka Joint Sessions judge faces contempt charge

The High Court on Tuesday issued rule asking a Dhaka lower court judge and another to explain by June 18 as to why contempt proceedings should not be drawn against them for flouting its order on a cheque bounce case.The contemners are 5th Dhaka Metropolitan Joint Sessions Judge Nurun Nahar Begum Sheuli and Gulshan branch officer of Brac Bank Shakil Mahmud Imon.
An HC division bench comprising Justice Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Ashraful Kamal came up with the rule after hearing a petition filed by Habibur Rahman.
On November 2, 2009, upon an application filed by Habibur Rahman, the HC stayed the proceedings of the cheque bounce case.
But on September 27 last year, the designated court following a plea filed by the officer of Brac Bank, Gushan Branch, resuming proceeding ignoring the HC stay order issued warrant of arrest for Habibur Rahman.
