A young expatriate allegedly committed suicide by slitting his throat
at Pashshim Darsha village in Sadar upazila on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Ripon Mia, 32, son of Abul Hossain of
the village. He retuned to home from Saudi Arabia two month backs.
Quoting the victim’s family, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police
Station Gausul Azam said Ripon committed suicide by slitting his
throat with sharp weapon in his room at noon.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Sylhet MAG
Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The reason behind the suicide could not be known immediately.
A UD case was filed with Jalalabad Police Station.
Bangladeshi shot dead in S Africa
A Bangladeshi man was reportedly gunned down by extortionists in
Johannesburg, South Africa early Saturday (Johannesburg time).
The deceased was identified as Tajuddin, a resident of Sirajpur
village of Companyganj upazila.
Victim’s elder brother Raihan Uddin said Tajuddin went to South Africa
about three years back and had a shop of cookeries.
He said a gang of 5-6 armed extortionists stormed into his shop when
Tajuddin was talking to him (Raihan) over mobile phone around 6.00am
(Bangladesh time) and demanded toll.
The extortionists, who had also extorted money from Tajuddin earlier,
opened fire on him indiscriminately as they thought that he was
inviting police over phone.
Later, Tajuddin’s compatriots told Raihan that his brother was gunned
down by the extortionists.
Further details and official version of the incident were still
