President of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury on Friday urged the government to take steps for holding a dialogue to overcome the current political deadlock before the foreigners force it to do so.
“The current political crisis is deepening gradually. It’s an ominous sign for democracy. I want to say there’s only one way to overcome– the government must engage in talks with the opposition,” the former president of Bangladesh said.Talking to reporters after visiting bullet-wounded BNP chairperson’s adviser Reaz Rahman at United Hospital, the former President also said, “I don’t want to say in advance that you may have to sit in talks with the opposition under foreign pressure if you (govt) don’t do that on your own initiative which will be shameful for the country.”
B Chowdhury blamed the government for the country’s current political deadlock. “The government will have to face the situation which it has created. What would have happened had it allowed BNP to hold a rally?”
He observed that denying BNP permission of holding a rally was the first blunder of the government while the second one was holding a rally by the ruling party on January 12 amid ban on any public gathering in the city.
B Chowdhury went to the hospital around 2pm and spent some time beside Reaz at his cabin.
He also enquired about his health condition from physicians. Reaz’s daughter Amena Rahman was present.
Unidentified criminals shot Reaz in the leg and waist and torched his car near Westin Hotel at Gulshan-2 on Tuesday night on his way back home from BNP chairperson’s office.
The BDB chief condemned the attack on Reaz and demanded the government immediately arrest the attacks and mete out exemplary punishment to them. He also wished Reaz’s early recovery. – UNB
