DPDC taskforce unearths massive electricity theft in Narayanganj

The special taskforce of Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited on Sunday had unearthed massive electricity theft and tax evasion during a drive in a 24 storied and 18 storied twin tower building named ‘Tokyo Plaza’ in Narayanganj.In these two buildings, tax evasion worth of nearly Tk 50 lakh was condcuted through meter tempering, unit manipulation and several other measures.
The DPDC special taskforce headed by Munir Chowdhury found out about this corruption during a drive in December 31 and in another drive In January 3.
The two buildings namely- 24 storied Tokyo Plaza-1 at Bibi Road, Narayanganj and 18 storied Tokyo Plaza-2 at Noyamati, Narayanganj were constructed in 2012.
But since their construction, several corruptive measures were taken to evade taxes. The taskforce after finding out about different irregularities and corruption including meter tempering, unit manipulation, getting commercial electricity connection through underhand dealing and evading transfer rent.
The taskforce immediately disconnected the electricity connection and realized Tk 18 Lakh as fine. Process has been initiated to realize the rest of the money.
About the drive, Munir Chowdhury said, “This is an incidence of massive electricity theft in the power sector”.
He also said that without the assistance and of the local DPDC officers and staff, such massive theft wouldn’t have been possible. “We will take harsh measure against the persons related with it”, he said.
