Dr Kamal asks law minister why Mainul arrested

Senior lawyer of Bangladesh Supreme Court Dr Kamal Hossain has demanded an explanation from Law Minister Anisul Huq on the arrest of his colleague and partner in the Jatiya Oikya Front Mainul Hosein.“Please tell me what’s happening in the country?” Dr Kamal, who heads the Gono Forum party and the newly formed Jatiya Oikya Front, asked at a programme in Dhaka on Thursday.
I want time from you. Please stand in Parliament and give the explanation. Parliament has some responsibilities. Speak there so that the people will be able to know, Dr Kamal said.
The Gono Forum chief said Anisul, as a Supreme Court lawyer and son of advocate Serajul Huq, knew the charges against Mainul, a sponsor of the new alliance, were bailable.
“Even if you don’t know anything else, you know the bailable offences because you practised with your father,” Dr Kamal said.
“Please make your employer understand that these (charges against Mainul) are bailable. Is it that one has to forget everything if he or she becomes a minister?” he asked.
“I want answers from you. You are a junior lawyer to us. Your father, Serajul Huq Bachchu Bhai, was my colleague. Have you forgotten the law? Then let’s check the law books.”
Mainul, a former adviser to the military-backed caretaker government and the publisher and chairman of the editorial board of The Daily New Nation, has recently been arrested in a case over “defaming the women” for calling a female journalist a woman characterless on TV.
Dr Kamal condemned the arrest of Mainul Hosein. He said he was “surprised” as Mainul was arrested even after securing bail from the High Court in other cases on the same charges.
What have they started? Do they want to turn a civilised country into a jungle? It (Bangladesh) is being turned into a jungle, Dr Kamal said. – From vernacular daily Manav Zamin and agencies
