A thirteen-member lawyers’ body form the Supreme Court on Sunday sent a legal notice to the authorities of Dhaka University (DU) and Rajshahi University (RU), asking them to know what legal measures would be taken against the ‘BCL leaders and activists’ who attacked quota protestors.
The lawyers’ body on behalf of the victim students — Md Faruk Hasan, Md Moshiur Rahman, Jasim Uddin and Rashed of DU and Tariqul Islam of RU — sent the legal notice by post to the vice-chancellors, proctors and registrars of the two universities.
The panel members are Jotirmoy Barua, Hasanat Qayum, Anwar Hossain Reza, Kazi Zahed Iqbal, Anik R Haq, Khandaker Shahariar Shakib, Ainur Nahar Siddiqa, Abeda Gulrukh, Humayun Kabir, Reza Islam Riaz, Ariful Haque Rokon, Faria Ferdous and Belayet Hossain.
The notice wanted to know what legal measures would be taken against the ‘BCL leaders and activists’ who were involved in the attacks on quota protestors on the DU campus on June 30 and the RU campus on July 1.
If the authorities of the two universities do not take legal steps against the leaders and activists who were directly involved in the attacks, the lawyers’ panel will take legal action against them, says the legal notice.
Talking to UNB, Barrister Jotirmoy Barua said BCL leaders and activists attacked the general students as they demonstrated seeking reform of the quota system in government jobs.
Although the media carried reports on the attacks, the authorities of the universities are yet to take any legal measures against the attackers, Barua said.
He said these incidents go counter to the legal and justice system of the country. It’s clear that the authorities of the universities are not fit for the posts they are holding, Barua added.
