EC meeting on upazila polls security Feb 6

The Election Commission will sit with the top brasses of law enforcing agencies on February 6 to finalise the security measures for the 4th countrywide upazila elections, beginning on February 19. Overall security measures for the staggered upazila elections will be discussed in the meeting scheduled to be held at 11am on Thursday at the conference room of the National Economic Council in the city’s Agargaon area, EC sources said.   Top officials of the Armed Forces Division, Police, Rab, BGB and Ansar will be present at the meeting to be presided over by Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad.   The meeting will discuss the reports of different intelligent agencies and suggestions of law enforcing agencies over the security arrangements for the upcoming elections.   This year the countrywide elections to nearly 480 upazila parishads out of the country’s 487 will be held in six phases by June next.   The first phase elections in 98 upazila parishads will be held on February 19, while the second phase polls in 117 upazila parishads on February 27.   As part of a tight security plan, the Commission has already decided to deploy the members of the Armed Forces in the upazila elections. – UNB
