Bail prayers of Moudud, 4 others rejected

A Dhaka court has rejected the bail pleas of five top BNP leaders, including party’s Standing Committee member Moudud Ahmed, in five cases involving Hifazat-e Islam’s mayhem in Dhaka last year.Other leaders whose bail pleas have been turned down are MK Anwar, Rafiqul Islam Mia, Hafizuddin Ahmed and Fazlul Haq Milon.
Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Zahurul Haq rejected their petitions on Thursday.
Hifazat had held a rally in Dhaka’s Motijheel on May 5 last year that ended in widespread violence. Several people were killed in clashes and both public and private property was damaged.
Defence lawyer Joynal Abedin Mesbah told bdnews24.com Moudud, Rafiqul and  Anwar had been denied bail in cases filed with the Motijheel police over the May 5 violence.
The court dismissed Hafiz’s plea in two cases filed with the Ramna and Motijheel police, while Milon’s plea in a case filed with Ramna police was also turned down.
Cops filed at least 16 cases with the Motijheel and Paltan Police stations over the Hifazat violence. – bdnews24.com
