Ershad’s letter of withdrawal of candidature flawed

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad’s application for withdrawing his candidature has been rejected in one constituency. The Returning Officer cancelled the withdrawal notice from the Dhaka-17 constituency because of an error in the entered date. However, his applications for withdrawal from Lalmonirhat-1 and Rangpur-3 parliamentary seats have been accepted. Ershad had sent the applications on Wednesday.
Dhaka district Returning Officer Zillar Rahman told bdnews24.com: “He sent a letter to withdraw his nomination on Dec 11 but it was dated Dec 5. So I could not accept the letter.”
The Jatiya Party leaders had submitted nomination papers on Dec 2 to run in the upcoming general election in 299 seats out of 300.
But the party chief later decided to boycott the polls and asked its contestants to withdraw.
He also asked his party’s four Ministers, two State Ministers and an Advisor to the Prime Minister in the ‘poll-time’ government to quit their positions in the government.
Ershad’s Personal Secretary Khaled Aktar said the Jatiya Party chief’s nomination withdrawal applications were accepted in Lalmonirhat and Rangpur.
“But the letter for candidature withdrawal for Dhaka-17 constituency has been sent back as there was a mistake in the date. The letter will be sent again on Thursday,” he said.
Earlier, Ershad’s Political and Press Secretary Sunil Shuvo Roy said his nomination withdrawal applications were sent to Dhaka, Rangpur, and Lalmonirhat Returning Officers.
Party Presidium Member Moshiur Rahman Ranga submitted Ershad’s application to the Rangpur district Returning Officer Farid Ahmed around noon on Wednesday.
In Lamonirhat, Returning Officer Habibur Rahman accepted his application.
The two officers told bdnews24.com that the decision on the applications would be taken on Dec 13, the last day for candidature withdrawal. – bdnews24.com
