Ex-addl IGP Oahidul held on war crimes charges

Dhaka, April 24  – Former Additional Inspector General of Police Oahidul Haque was arrested here on Tuesday afternoon for his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
A team of Gulshan Police Station picked him up from his Baridhara residence around 1:30pm in compliance with a warrant issued by the International Crimes Tribunal on Monday for his arrest, said Additional Deputy Commissioner (Gulshan zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Abdul Ahad.
Later, he was produced before the ICT which sent him under the custody of Detective Branch of police, said Abu Bakr Siddique, officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station.
Prosecutor Turin Afroz said the ICT issued the warrant for the arrest of Oahidul, also former acting Director General of National Security Intelligence (NSI), as it found him guilty of carrying out mass killing in Rangpur Cantonment during the Liberation War.
Oahidul was the then army personnel of Pakistan and involved in crimes against humanity while performing duties during the Liberation War.
The war crimes allegations were brought against him in 2016.
Hailing from Chandibardi village in Madaripur district, Oahidul joined Pakistan army on October 16, 1966. Later, he was transferred to 29 cavalry regiment and then Multan Cantonment in Pakistan in 1970.
He joined the Rangpur Cantonment as regiment adjutant on March 30, 1971 and he was transferred to Pakistan in April, 1971 and stayed there till December 1974.
In 1974, Oahidur returned home as he went on retirement. On October 1, 1976, he joined Bangladesh Police as assistant police super and served Bangladesh Police as Comilla ASP in 1977.
In 1978, he became Chittagong additional SP while SP of Noakhali in 1982.
Oahidu served as the DMP Additional Commissioner from 1984 to 1987.
He was made Deputy Inspector General of Chattogram range in 1988 and later he served as CMP Police Commissioner in 1991.
Oahidur served as a director of NSI from 1991 to 1996. Later, he was made acting Director General of the agency.
He also served as the Director General of the Directorate of Immigration and Passports from 1997 to 2000 and rejoined the office again in 2002.
In 2005, Oahidul was made additional IGP. -UNB
