Experts for exploring brighter prospect to raise fish production

Proper exploration of prevailing brighter prospect in pisciculture sector can increase fish
production to bring economic self- reliance to the farmers through alleviating poverty in
rural areas, experts said yesterday.
They were addressing a daylong field level coaching event arranged for the farmers
on ‘Improved Carp Poly-culture in Pond and Horticulture on Dyke’ at fish farm of farmer
Nazmul Haque Bulu in village Debipur under Mithapukur upazila.
WorldFish organised the coaching under the USAID funded Cereal Systems Initiative
for South Asia in Bangladesh (CSISA-BD) Project to educate farmers on improved
management and technologies for cultivation of mono-sex Tilapia and carp variety fishes.
A large number of male and female farmers, owners of fish nurseries and hatcheries,
fertiliser traders, lead farmers, mega feed dealers, local public representatives, officials
and experts of the CSISA team and elite participated.
With beneficiary of CSISA-BD Project of WorldFish and successful fish farmer Nazmul
Haque Bulu in the chair, District Fisheries Officer Rawshanara Begum attended the
occasion as the chief guest.

Habibur Rahman delivered his presentation narrating the improved mono-sex Tilapia
and carp fish cultivation and management technologies. Valiant freedom fighter Sultan
Ahmed, teacher of Pairaband Begum Rokeya Memorial Girls’ High School Ranjina
Saber and Aquaculture Officer of Souhardo-II Programme of CAE Bangladesh Sumitra
Rani addressed as the special guests.
Farmer Nazmul Haque Bulu narrated how he achieved self-reliance through farming
mono-sex Tilapia in his 40 decimal pond and vegetables on its dyke with the assistances
and supports of the CSISA-BD Project of WorldFish.
“Excluding all costs, I expect to earn a net profit of Taka 1.20 lakh by December next by
selling only fish and more money through selling vegetables like gourd, bean etc on the
dyke adopting the improved management technologies of WorldFish,” he said.
He compared as how he incurred losses in the past through farming fish using traditional
methods and earning of lucrative profits now by cultivating mono-sex Tilapia and
vegetables on dyke using the improved management and technologies.
The chief guest suggested coordinated efforts of fish farmers, fish seed producers and
traders, owners of fish nurseries and hatcheries, fertiliser traders, lead farmers and mega
feed dealers for successful farming and marketing of Tilapia and carp fishes. -BSS,
