Extortion may affect market prices: FBCCI

Predent of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed on Sunday voiced concern that the prevalence of extortion on the highways can affect the prices of essentials and vegetables during the month of Ramadan.Addressing a views-exchange meeting organised by the FBCCI at its head office, he urged the authorities concerned to take special measures to make sure that the traders face no extortion while transporting essentials during the month of fasting.
“Extortion of money is a great problem at every stage of transportation. There’s extortion when the essentials are transported from villages to the wholesale market, or when the goods are being loaded on trucks at the wholesale market, or on the highways as the trucks head towards cities,” he said.
Akram said the FBCCI will take up the issue with the highway police and other relevant authorities and request them to take special measures to curb the extortion of money on the highways. “I’ll also bring this matter to the notice of the ruling party leaders,” he said.
The views-exchange meeting was also addressed by Commerce Secretary Mahbub Ahmed and FBCCI Vice President Helal Uddin. (Source: UNB)
