Mahmudur Rahman Manna, convener of Nagorik Oikya, was handed over to Detective Branch police by the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Tuesday midnight. He has been shown arrested in a sedition case filed with Gulshan Police Station, according to sources.
Family sources said on hearing news that Rab admitted his arrest under a case filed with Gulshan thana, Manna’s wife, son and daughter rushed to the police station and were told that he was taken straight to the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.Mahmudur Rahman Manna was picked up from the hosue of his neice in Banani at about 3am on Monday night by plainclothes police who told them he was being taken to the Detective Branch. On query however the Detective Branch expressed its ignorance about the development. This led to serious concern among the political quarters which demanded statement from the government on Manna’s whereabouts.
Meher Nigar, Manna’s wife had meanwhile filed a diary with Banani police. She also filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking a rule for presenting her hu sband before the court within 24 hours. – News Desk
