A Dhaka court on Thursday relived 26 people, including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, its standing committee members Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, from a violence case filed under the anti terrorism (amendment) act.
Dhaka metropolitan sessions judge Kamrul Hossain Molla passed the order after accepting the chargesheet placed by police in the case.
Some other BNP leaders relieved from the case include Amanullah Aman, Barkatullah Bulu, Saiful Islam Nirob, Abdus Salam and Salahuddin Ahmed.
According to the case statement, miscreants hurled a petrol bomb on a bus near Ruposhi Bangla Hotel in Paribagh during a general strike enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance on 3 January in 2014, killing Shaheen Akter and Farid Mia and injuring its driver Babul Miah.
Ramna police station sub-inspector Ashraful Islam filed a case in this connection. Later, the case was shifted to Detective Branch (DB) of police.
On 29 April, 2015, DB police sub-inspector Bahauddin Farruqi submitted the chargesheet accusing six people, including Rbiul Islam Nayan and Jobaier Hossain and relieving 26 people, mainly BNP and Jamaat leaders from the case.
After hearing, the court on Thursday took cognizance of the chargesheet.
US teams due: Airport, cyber security on agenda
Two US teams are likely to be here in Dhaka this month to discuss various issues, including airport and cyber securities, and future collaboration in these areas.
A delegation, led by Alan Bersin, assistant secretary for international affairs and chief diplomatic officer for the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Policy, is likely to be here in the last week of the current month, said sources at the foreign ministry.
Bersin oversees DHS’s international engagement, serves as the principal advisor to the secretary in all matters pertaining to international affairs, and is responsible for leading the Department’s strategic planning and policy formulation functions.
Before that, another delegation, led by Thomas Dukes, deputy coordinator for cyber issues at the US State Department, is likely to visit Dhaka on 22-23 March.
Dukes is responsible for cybercrime, cyber-security, national security and capacity building issues, as well as overall management of personnel, budget and strategic planning for the secretary’s office of the coordinator of cyber issues.
US ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat met foreign secretary M Shahidul Haque on Thursday and discussed about the upcoming visits, foreign ministry sources also said. – Agencies
