Farmers to produce 43,240 tonnes onion in Manikgaanj

Farmers and agriculturists are expecting that around 43,240 tonnes of onion would be produced in seven upazilas of the district during the current season.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said a total of 4,324 hectares of land were brought under onion cultivation in the district with a production target of 43,240 tonnes.The district is famous for onion cultivation. The land of Shibalaya and Harirampur upazila and some parts of Ghior upazila are very much suitable for the cultivation. The quality of the onion of the district is comparatively better than the others districts, DAE sources said.
Farmers said onion is one of the main crops in the district. They cultivate onion and at the same time chili on the same land. After harvesting the onion the farmers take care of chili which comes later.
The cultivators also produced high yielding onion seeds including Jhitkapury. Few years ago most of the onion seeds were collected from outside the district, but now the seeds are produced here, DAE sources said.BSS, Manikganj
