A workshop titled The Art and Craft of Adaptation has been one such attraction to brood on. It was conducted by Professor Alexis Krasilovsky from State University of California, USA. It was hosted at EMK Center in the city from January 3 to 8. The certificates to the fifty-two participants were awarded on January 17.
The workshop, The Art and Craft of Adaptation, focused on exploring the creative storytelling processes which writers employ to transform novels, short stories, plays, memoirs, biographies or historical accounts into effective screenplays. Amidst a supportive environment-working individually and in groups-writers interested in developing adaptations for film and television practiced honing skills in dramatic structure, visual storytelling, and character growth. Alexis, spoke about various techniques which aspiring writers for motion pictures and feature films should know about to become adept in writing an international standard script. The workshop consisted of five days of intensive group work, supportive individual work out of which treatments on various stories came out.
IAFM plans to work further on these stories and more with aspiring female filmmakers of Bangladesh with a panel of international screenplay writers and critique. After the workshop was concluded, participants were left with the ideas on how to write a treatment to pitch producers and production houses, as well as, develop scripts based on it.
After studying film history at Yale University, Alexis Krasilovsky embarked on a career as an independent filmmaker and holographer. She later received an MFA in Film/Video from California Institute of the Arts.
Krasilovsky was the first to include the film techniques of zooming and dissolving in a motion picture hologram, Created and Consumed by Light (1975). Her pro-choice hologram, Childbirth Dream, was exhibited at the Georges Pompidou Center and other museums and festivals here and abroad.
As head of her own production company – Rafael Film, LLC – Krasilovsky has written, directed and produced numerous documentaries, video-poems and art films, including End of the World, Exile, What Memphis Needs and Blood.
