The premiere screening of the film Putul Kotha, alternatively called Dream Weavers, took place at the Krishibid Institute Bangladesh (KIB) on April 9 Sunday in the capital.
The University of Manitoba of Canada produced the film while Emdad Haque, a Bangladeshi expatriate filmmaker living in Canada, developed the film’s concept, in addition to co-directing and co-producing the film.
State Minister for Woman and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki graced the premiere, among other guests.
Based on a true event, the 75-minutes film is about believing in oneself. The film features Jayanta Chattopadhyay, Naznin Hasan Chumki, Ahsan Habib Nasim and Kaoru Ryan Klatt in leading roles.
In 2015, Putul Kotha won the environmental film award in the Royal Reel category of International Film Festival Canada, Vancouver.
The film is narrated from the point of view of Ryan Klatt, a young independent filmmaker who comes across an article about green micro finance in Bangladesh while searching for a meaningful subject. It follows Klatt from Canada to Bangladesh.
Klatt’s story revolves around Putul. It begins when after just a year of marriage, her husband is critically injured in a clash with powerful landowners. This setback forces Putul to move back to her parents’ house, with her husband and only son. But it also creates an opportunity for her to imagine new beginnings. Putul starts a new venture which was not without obstacles, but over time it flourished and began to transform her life and the lives of many other women and families in the village.
The film was shot on locations in Bangladesh and Canada, creating an honest view of the lives of a population typically ignored in economic development plans.
The film is scheduled to air very soon on the state owned TV channel BTV.
