Five people, including a woman, died and four others fell sick after taking rectified spirit in Shibganj upazila on Thursday.The deceased were identified as Sudhir and his wife Chantara, Shafiqul Islam, Mosharraf Hossain and Deen Mohammad of the upazila.
Police said some people of the upazila took rectified spirit on Wednesday night and fell sick. Of them, Chantara, a cleaner, died at her residence near Shibganj Bazar around 7am.
Neighbours took Sudhir, Safiqul and Din Mohammad to Shibganj upazila hospital as their condition deteriorated at noon. Sudhir and Safiqul died at the hospital around 2pm.
Two others — Deen Mohammad and Mosharraf – died at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where they were moved at noon as their conditions deteriorated. – UNB, Chapaimawabganj
