Five given life imprisonment in land dispute case

Dhaka, Nov 12 – A Dhaka court sentenced 5 persons of two families of Dhaka’s Keraniganj to life-term imprisonment in case filed in connection with land dispute. Judge Mohammad Bazlur Rahman of the Seventh Additional District and Sessions Court of Dhaka passed the order in presence of the convicts.
They are-two dead brothers son Hafiz Uddin’s son Shafiuddin and Shahab Uddin, their brother Salauddin’s son Sumon, Tamijuddin’s son Jasim Uddin and Ashim Uddin.
At the same time convicts were fined Tk 10,000 each in default they will suffer six month’s imprisonment each. The convicts were also sentenced to one year’s imprisonment each, with another fine of Tk 5000 in default they will suffer two months’ imprisonment.
Another accused of the case, first two convicts brother Salauddin died during the trial process.
After the charge-sheet was submitted, on September 15, 2013, the Ministry of Home decided to withdraw the case saying that the case was political.
Later, Dhaka District Public Prosecutor Office submitted the withdrawal order to the court. Later, the court refused the withdrawal order considering no confidence motion of the complainant. However, the accused moved the High Court which upheld lower court order. Later, trial begun against accused and hence the verdict.
The brief case history says that on September 22, 2004, victim Mostafa was killed while he was going to the market from his Joynagar village home of Keraniganj Police Station. The victim’s two brothers-in-law- Haider Ali and Rabi Hossain accompanied him. On the occasion, the accused attacked them with locally made weapons. Seriously injured Mostafa was taken to the Mitford Hospital and then to Dhaka Medical College where he succumbed to his injuries. Haider Ali and Rabi Hossain were also injured in the incident.
On September 23, 2004, victim’s wife Sajeda Khatun filed the case on September 23, 2004. On October 19, 2006, CID Police Inspector Abul Hashem submitted the charge-sheet of the case to the court accusing the six persons. – Special Correspondent
