Food, nutrition research and policy workshop opens in Dhaka

Dhaka, Feb 24 – A 7-day training workshop for mid-level officials of Ministry of Food and Directorate General of Food and the Directorate General of Food Planning and Monitoring unit organized by the Integrated Food Policy Research Program with technical guidance of the DG Food and the project management unit of the modern food storage project was inaugurated on Sunday at CIRDAP auditorium.
The training workshop aims to increase the analytical capacity of the trainees, thus enabling them to make more effective and efficient food policy decisions and contribute to food policy formulation and policy implementation.
Shahabuddin Ahmed, Secretary of Ministry of Food, inaugurated the workshop as the chief guest while Dr. K. A. S. Murshid, Director General of BIDS was the keynote speaker. M. Badrul Arefin, Director
General, Food Planning and Monitoring Unit (FPMU); Mr. Gazi ur Rahman, Project Director for Modern Food Storage Program (MFSP) and Dr. Akhter Ahmed, Country Representative for IFPRI also spoke at the inaugural function.
The closing remarks were delivered by Mr. Md. Arifur Rahman Apu, Director General, Directorate General of Food (DG Food) who Chaired the event. The session was attended by around 100 participants including researchers, development professionals, and sector specialists.
The workshop is planned to provide an inclusive platform for stakeholders, including the government, civil society and the private sector, to work together and develop policy recommendations and guidance on topics affecting food security and nutrition.
The training is largely aligned with the government’s Vision 2021 mandate which aims to eliminate food insecurity. In addition, as the government has graduated from low income country to a lower middle-income country, the Government of Bangladesh intends to establish e-governance in each sector; and Food Sector is of no difference. – Staff Reporter
