Former Chittagong Mayor Mohiuddin Chy dies

Dhaka – The Chittagong city unit Awami League (AL) president and former Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury died early Friday at a private hospital in the port city. The 73-year old veteran leader was suffering from cardiac and kidney complications for a long time and was put on life support in a Chittagong hospital from Thursday evening.Dr Liaqat Ali Khan, managing director of Max Hospital said, “ When the condition of the Mohiuddin Chowdhury worsened he was put on life support. At around 3 am the life support was removed as he was not responding.”
Osman Gani, private secretary of ABM Mohiuddin Chowdury that the leader was brought at the hospital for routine dialysis. He was breathed his last at 3 am.
Over the death of the populist leader of Chittagong mourn grips among the people all walk of life including leaders and activists of AL and its wings. Hundred of thousand people gathered at his Chasma Hill residence to see the favourite leader for the last time to paid the last respect. Many were seen broke into tears.
President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina, AL general secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, CCC mayor AJM Nasir Uddun, BNP stnading committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, different political leaders and organisations have expressed their condolences over the death of the veteran leader.
He left two sons, three daughters, wife, relatives, friends, political associates, well-wishers for mourning his death.
After being treated at Singapore and Capital Dhaka he was returned in Chittagong on Tuesday. On November 11 when he was arrested by mild heart attack and suffering from kidney complications was admitted at the Max Hospital. On November 12 by a helicopter he was sent to Dhaka and admitted at Square Hospital. On November 16, he wad sent to Singapore. In Singapore at a hospital two rings were set up at his heart. On Thursday, when he felt ill again he was admitted at Max Hospital and breathed his last at around 3am.
“He was suffering from cardiac and kidney complications. On Thursday evening he was admitted at Intensive Care Unit with life support. He was breathed his last around 3 am in the hospital,” said Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, Organising Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League and son of this veteran leader.
After Asr prayer the Namaz-e- Janaza (the funeral prayer) was held at historic Laldigi grounds. In his funeral prayer thousands of people including AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Publication secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud, BNP’s vice president Abdullah Al Noman, Dr Shadat Hossain other political leaders, top administration officials were taken part.
After the funeral prayer he was buried at his family graveyard at Chasms Hill in the port city.
Earlier, his body was kept at Darul Fazal Market, City Office of Chittagong city unit AL for the people for their last tribute from 3pm to 3:45pm. People from all walks of life inclduing Political leaders, people from civil society, to official of the local administration paid their last tribute to Mohiuddin. At 4pm Mohiuddin, a freedom fighter was given a guard of honour by the local administration.
ABM Mohiuddin Chowdury had served to CCC for 16 years in three times from 1994 to 2005. However, was not elected as MP. In 1986 and 1991 he vied for national election.
He had started politics from his early life. In 1967 he had completed his graduation and studied MA in Islamic Studies in Chittagong University. During his college life he had been involved with politics. He had served as General Secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League of Chittagong city in 1968 and 1969.
In 1971 he had taken part at Liberation War actively and formed Joy Bangla Bahini. During his tenure as city mayor massive developments were held in Chittagong. For his devotion to Chittagong, Chittagong port and people he is called as ‘Chattralar Bir’ (. He was born on December 01,1944. – Staff Reporter
