Rajshahi University (RU), the second largest educational institution
of the country, celebrated its 60th founding anniversary amid
enthusiasm and fanfare through various programmes on RU campus
Saturday.
They programmes of the day included rallies, tree plantation,
discussion meeting and cultural functions.
In the morning, RU Vice-Chancellor Professor Mijanuddin inaugurated
the programmes by hoisting national flag and releasing balloons in
front of senate building while provosts of all dormitories hoisted
flags in front of the halls. National anthem was sung at the time of
flag hoisting.
Then a rally was followed by teachers, students, officials and
employees of the university that paraded the main streets of the
campus.
A discussion meeting was held at Kazi Nazrul Islam auditorium. In the
meeting RU Vice- Chancellor Professor Mijanuddin was present as chief
guest while Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan
presided.
Among others, the discussion was attended by former Vice Chancellor of
RU, also former High Commissioner of Bangladesh for United Kingdom
Professor Sayedur Rahman Khan, former RU Pro-VC Professor Mamnunul
Keramat, Social Science Faculty Dean Professor Ansar Uddin, Head of
the Geography and Environment Science department Professor Raquib
Ahmed, President of Rajshahi University Teachers Association (RUTA)
Professor M Azhar Ali, General Secretary of RUTA Professor Sultanul
Haque, Professor of Finance and Banking department Afrauzzaman Khan,
Professor Ananda Kumar Shah of Zoology department, Professor M Rafiqul
Islam of Economics department and President of RU officers Club M
Fazlul Haque.
In the discussion meeting speakers said Rajshahi University has been
retaining its glory through contributing in academic and research
arena of the country as well as in the world.
They mentioned, RU has a glorious history in the liberation war.
RU Vice-Chancellor Professor Mijanuddin expressed his plan to increase
the number of departments and institutes to enhance the quality of
education and research.
The programme was also attended by RU Registrar Professor Nazrul
Islam, Proctor Tariqul Hasan and Administrator of Public relation
office Professor M Elias Hossain. RU was set up on July 6, 1953 after
a recommendation of Sadler Commission on the bank of the mighty river
